What to Expect from Counselling?

The First Session

The first (introductory) session will give an opportunity for you to meet me and ask any questions you might have.  I will also explain about some important aspects of counselling, such as timing, confidentiality and fees etc.  I will ask for a short history about yourself.  Together we will discuss your needs and expectations from our counselling sessions together. If you choose to continue with having counselling, we will agree a regular time, frequency and number of sessions.   You can opt for short term work of 6 sessions, long term work for deeper issues.

The Counselling Process

At all times, you, as the client, are in control of your own counselling process.  You will be involved in choosing what you need from the counselling time.  In this way you are actively involved in creating the change that you are seeking.  I am trained to listen without judging and to enable you, the client, to seek your own answers.

In each session we will explore aspects of your life that you are finding challenging.  By talking openly, with an empathic listening ear, many people find that they are able to gain more insight into their issues which helps to bring about the change they desire.

My Approach

I have a strong Client-Centred approach.  I may offer creative Gestalt interventions using art, writing, visualisation and Sand Tray as a way of gaining insight and processing emotion.  I can also work with CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) to gently challenge any underlying limiting thoughts and beliefs.

My Interests

I am particularly interested in stress, anxiety and relaxation - including mindfulness.  I can offer mindful breathing practice within our sessions.  We can also explore the effects of food upon mood.  I enjoy being outdoors, so have training in Walk and Talk therapy which I offer on Dartmoor (Haytor area) and Dartington.

Feedback and Reviews

We will have regular review sessions to enable you to give me feedback on how you are finding the counselling sessions.  This is a valuable part of the process, giving information about how we can move forward together in the work.

If you have a specific enquiry, then please email me for information.
