I am a trainee yoga teacher and currently offer classes by donation for which proceeds go to a local charity.
For me personally, yoga has been as source of immense psychological support over the years. Professionally, I recognise that ancient yoga practices offer benefits to mental as well as physical health. The yoga I offer follows the principles of choice, individuality, exploratory movement and finding our edges. Emphasis is on how the body feels in the pose and how the pose is expressed in each individual body, rather than the end goal of achieving a particular shape. There's no right or wrong, no measure of joint flexibility, simply a sense of how the body moves and noticing where attention goes during the practice. This makes it an embodied and mindful experience.
Within the practice, attention is drawn to the sense of groundedness, the pattern of the breath flowing with the movement and the accompanying sensations within the body. Physically, yoga helps to undo the impacts of our modern stressed and sedentary lifestyles. We bring fluidity to our joints, lengthening to our muscle fibres, strengthening to our bones. And with movement of our physical body, our mental, emotional and spiritual selves benefit, also finding spaciousness - and there is no separation they are all intertwined. Most of us are "tired and wired" and can't fully find rest. But as we flow with movement and breath, our nervous systems can begin to settle and we are invited into a sense of ease. We can begin to feel more fully ourselves, our true, authentic nature, present right here, right now.
I offer group classes in and around Ashburton. I can also incorporate yoga into one to one therapy sessions. If you'd like more information about my classes or would like to be added to my mailing list, please message me (text, email, WhatsApp).
I have been interested in breath work for a long time and have found it very helpful in my own life. In 2022 I became a qualified Breath Work Practitioner (CPCAB Level 2). I frequently bring breath awareness into my work with clients - many of whom have also found it has been profoundly supportive. As well as incorporating breath work in counselling sessions, I offer stand alone breath work sessions - to facilitate you to become aware of your habitual breath patterns and enable you to breathe more fully - to feel calmer and relaxed.
